Formerly enslaved, George Griffin worked for Mark Twain's family for 17 years and became far more than staff — a respected Hartford community figure. Many scholars believe he partly shaped the character of Jim in Huckleberry Finn. A costumed guide plays him on the Mark Twain House living-history tour.
