The 33-mile loop around the rim, with more than twenty overlooks framing the lake from every angle. The current road was rebuilt between 1931 and 1941 and is now listed as a National Register historic district; it climbs to nearly 7,900 feet at Cloudcap. Snow buries it for much of the year — the park averages some forty feet a winter — which is why my first attempt, one winter had to turn back at the snowy rim.
